A PLP-dependent alpha-oxoamine synthase whose functional form is the first enzyme in the pathway for synthesis of all tetrapyrroles in non-photosynthetic eukaryotes and alpha-proteobacteria. ALAS catalyzes the decarboxylative condensation of glycine and succinyl-CoA, yielding 5-aminolevulinic acid, free coenzyme-A and CO2.
