PRO name sodium leak channel NALCN
Synonyms
PRO-short-label: NALCN
EXACT: CanIon; sodium leak channel non-selective protein; voltage gated channel-like protein 1
Gene-based: VGCNL1
Definition An ion channel protein that is a translation product of the human NALCN gene or a 1:1 ortholog thereof. The prototype subunit contains four copies of the six transmembrane ion transport protein domain, but the number of copies of this domain varies among splice variants. Responsible for the background sodium ion leak current in neurons and controls neuronal excitability. They are subunits of a voltage-independent, nonselective cation channel. [PMID:17448995, PRO:CNA]
Comment Note: NALCN operates as part of a complex with UNC80 (PR:000017098) and UNC79 (PR:000030850) that together form a fucntional channel. [PRO:DAN, PMID:21040849]
