PRO name C-type asialoglycoprotein receptor
Definition A protein that is an integral membrane protein and is responsible for the clearance of desialylated, galactose-terminal glycoproteins from the circulation by receptor-mediated endocytosis. It can be subdivided into four functional domains: the cytosolic domain, the transmembrane domain, the stalk and the carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD). The functional receptor, a galactose lectin, is an oligomer of two types of similar polypeptide chains, each of which weakly binds galactose. High-affinity binding of complex oligosaccharides requires a precise geometric arrangement of receptor subunits. The two subunits have different functions in receptor assembly, ligand binding and endocytosis. [PMID:10891274, PMID:1785139]
